A first name in the greeting tells the reader one thing: you have a database. Everyone on the list gets the same sentence, and everyone knows it.
There are three levels, and only the third one earns a reply. The name and the company are the first. The industry, the funding round, the job posting are the second: better, still automatic. The third is one line that could only have been written to this person, about something they did.
The third level does not scale by machine. It scales by narrowing the list until writing that line is affordable. Five hundred people you can say something true about beat five thousand you cannot.
We write the profile before we write a word of copy, and the list is cut to the size where the third level is possible. Volume is bought with more domains, not with a looser list.
